1. Moving in Mount Pleasant: what a move there involves
The Town rules below apply inside Town limits, so confirm your address is inside them. Mount Pleasant is one of Charleston County’s municipalities. The town is home to 93,993 people in 39,884 households, and 26% of its occupied homes are renter-occupied (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimates; ACS figures are estimates with margins of error).
Portable storage containers: one unit, 60 days
Section 156.499 of the Town’s zoning code sets the limits:
- Size and number. One portable storage unit per site, no larger than 8 feet wide, 16 feet long and 8 feet high.
- Time. No more than 60 days in a calendar year without a building permit; with a valid building permit, the duration of construction.
- Placement. In residential districts, the driveway, unless the rear of the site is readily accessible; a front yard only if the Zoning Administrator determines no driveway is available and the rear isn’t readily accessible, and only where the unit doesn’t obstruct the free, convenient and normal use of any easement dedicated for public right-of-way use. A unit can’t take up required parking spaces.
- Hurricane watch. Once a recognized government agency issues a hurricane watch, the unit’s owner or operator must remove it immediately or secure it to withstand winds over 100 miles per hour.
Where the moving truck stands
The Town’s street rules apply to a moving truck like any other vehicle:
- Section 72.03: no parking or leaving any vehicle unattended on the paved or main traveled portion of a street.
- Section 72.05: no stopping, standing or parking on a street in a way that leaves less than 10 feet of the roadway’s width free for traffic, except a temporary stop while actually loading or unloading passengers, or a stop needed to obey traffic regulations, signs, signals or a police officer.
- Section 72.02: except to avoid conflict with other traffic or on the directions of a police officer or traffic-control device, no stopping, standing or parking on a sidewalk, in front of a public or private driveway or within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, among other places.
- Section 95.07: no obstruction placed in the Town’s streets or sidewalks without proper authority, so keep furniture and boxes off both.
Moving into or out of I’On? The neighborhood’s Moving Van Notice says, “Please know moving vans more than 45 feet with large cabs are not allowed in I’On.”
Furniture, garbage and moving boxes
Inside Town limits, the Town’s Public Services Department ((843) 849-2022) runs garbage and trash collection; multi-family and commercial properties arrange their own disposal.
- Garbage. Collection is weekly. Town-issued roll carts go to the curb by 7:00 a.m., handles facing the house, and come back in within 12 hours of collection. The cart stays with the house when you move.
- Boxes. Broken down so they fit loosely inside the Town cart; cardboard outside the cart will not be collected, and Town code sends large quantities of cardboard to a recycling center.
- Furniture and appliances. Curbside on your garbage day for bulk-item collection, in their own pile, refrigerator doors removed: on the road by the curb but not blocking it, and at least six feet from stormwater structures, water meters and utility pedestals.
- Not collected. Electronics such as TVs and computers, and contractor-generated debris.
Charleston County collects recycling at the curb every other week: flatten boxes and put them inside the cart, never beside it. Large amounts of move-in cardboard can go to a County convenience center or drop-off site. The convenience centers require proof of County residency and an advance appointment for a moving van, box truck or double-axle trailer ((843) 720-7111), and bar commercial businesses and contractors.
Water and sewer: Mount Pleasant Waterworks
Town code names Mount Pleasant Waterworks (MPW) as the public body responsible for water and wastewater service within the Town. If MPW serves your new home, request service yourself, online or in person at 1619 Rifle Range Road: MPW won’t process requests made by a third party, so a mover can’t do it for you. Homeowners need the current account holder to close the existing account first, and landlords of rental properties must call 843-884-9626 to open an account. Start and stop requests are processed within two business days, MPW doesn’t guarantee same-day service, and its policy requires a security deposit on new accounts. Temporary service of 14 days or less for a home inspection, cleaning for a new owner or tenant, or a delayed closing is exempt from the deposit and the new-account fee.
The bridge and I-526
We’re based in Mount Pleasant. The Town describes the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge as spanning the Cooper River to connect Mount Pleasant and Charleston; in 2005 it replaced the two aging bridges over the river. I-526 links Mount Pleasant with North Charleston and West Ashley: SCDOT’s I-526 Lowcountry Corridor EAST study covered the 11 miles from Virginia Avenue in North Charleston to about US 17 in Mount Pleasant.
2. Our moving services in Mount Pleasant
Movers and packers, a truck and crew, or a crew for your rental truck: we book three kinds of crews, each with two to six movers.
Full Moving Service
Our Full Moving Service books a packing crew and a moving crew for your household goods. The moving crew’s rate covers the crew, our truck and the equipment (dollies, furniture pads and straps), and basic furniture disassembly is part of the job, billed as time worked.
Truck + Labor Crew
Packing yourself? A Truck + Labor Crew brings our truck and a crew to load your home and unload it at the other end, at the same hourly rates as a Full Moving Service’s moving crew, without packing or unpacking labor.
Moving Labor Only
Rented your own moving truck or a portable container? A Moving Labor Only crew loads or unloads it: we load your rental truck here, and you drive it. The same crews handle packing and unpacking labor and inside labor, such as a move inside one building. Our labor-only guide explains where a crew’s responsibility ends.
Packing and unpacking
With Full Moving Service, the packing crew is booked separately from the moving crew and comes on a different day. Packing labor is also available on its own from a Moving Labor Only crew; a Truck + Labor Crew doesn’t pack. Packing supplies carry an additional fee; on a Full Moving Service, it’s added after the job if supplies are used. Specialty items such as pianos, gun safes, exercise equipment and motorized beds carry an additional charge, and we quote upright pianos by phone.
If you’re planning an office move in Mount Pleasant, our office move guide walks through it. See our page on commercial and office movers.
3. Our published rates
Local moves are billed by the hour. Crew size sets the hourly rate, and your home and its access (stairs, elevators, walk distance, parking) set the hours.
| Crew | Crew with our truck | Labor-only crew |
|---|---|---|
| 2 movers | $135/hr | $115/hr |
| 3 movers | $155/hr | $135/hr |
| 4 movers | $175/hr | $155/hr |
| 5 movers | $195/hr | $175/hr |
| 6 movers | $225/hr | $195/hr |
The with-truck rates apply to a Truck + Labor Crew and to the moving crew of a Full Moving Service; a Full Moving Service’s packing crew is booked from our Moving Labor Only crews at the labor-only rates. Every crew carries a two-hour minimum, billed even if the job finishes sooner. Additional fees may apply. Packing supplies are an additional fee: on a Full Moving Service where supplies are used, it’s added after the job is complete. We often need 7 to 10 days’ notice to schedule a move. Our guide to what a local move costs in Charleston covers what drives the hours, and our service rates page has the current rates.
